What to Do When a Tree Falls on Your House

A tree on the house is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a homeowner. The good news is that almost every situation is recoverable if you handle the first hour correctly. Here is the exact sequence we coach customers through when they call our emergency line.

Step 1: Get everyone out of the affected rooms. Even if the ceiling looks intact, a tree resting on a roof is still loaded with weight and can shift without warning. Move people and pets to the opposite side of the house and stay there until a professional has assessed it.

Step 2: Call 911 if anyone is hurt, if there is gas smell, or if there is visible structural collapse. Don't try to push through a 'maybe' here — first responders would rather show up to a false alarm than arrive too late.

Step 3: Check for utility involvement. If any branches are touching power lines or pulled a service line off the house, do not approach the tree. Shut off power at the main breaker if you can do so safely, call the power company, and wait for them to de-energize the line before anyone touches it.

Step 4: Document everything. As soon as it's safe, take photos and short videos from multiple angles — outside, inside, the affected rooms, the tree itself. Your insurance adjuster will ask for these, and the more you have the smoother the claim.

Step 5: Call a licensed emergency tree service. We run 24/7 across Delaware and Maryland at (443) 206-3980. Most calls in our service area are on-site within a few hours. We can tarp the opening, stabilize the tree, and remove it safely without making the structural damage worse.

Step 6: Call your insurance company. In almost every homeowner's policy, tree damage to a structure is a covered loss. Your insurer will dispatch an adjuster and coordinate with us on scope and pricing. We've worked with every major carrier in the region and can speak their language.

The single biggest mistake we see is homeowners trying to cut up the tree themselves before the insurance adjuster sees it. Don't. Document, secure, and call the pros.
